There are still passionate people out there....it's just discouraged by society in general.

I think it is over-broad to say that there are no more passionate people. Passionate about what? And what kind of passion are you talking about?
If you mean that there are not many people with a calling, with a vocation in social justice, you may be right. Maybe this is because our society discourages them as kittenheart suggest, if not deliberately, perhaps simply because the non-conformist is not needed to challenge the status quo. For the most part, we live comparably comfortable lives in this country and from where I sit, it does not seem like there is as much to rage against as there has been in places like Latin America where liberation theologians and others of that ilk have had the courage and passion to step beyond spouting their beliefs during Sunday mass to walk their talk, often at the expense of life or limb. Most of us do not have the stomach or opportunity for this kind of passion.

Good analogy, Lumpster......I think what you mean here (and correct me if I am wrong is that is that in metaphorical terms fat and happy = no passion.....

I was just seconding Maggie's point. When you're relatively well off financially, you're bound to be more complacent.

I don't know blazin - who are you comparing today's people with? I'm not so sure we are any different that your basic serfs working the land in a different time. We work for our famililes - some of us extend that to our communities - others to society as a whole. I don't believe people of a different generation were all that different. We still have great composers, poets, artists, political minds, humanitarians and so on. Those people are certainly passionate. Are there less of them than before? Am I missing something?
