ok, so our toilet is having issues. well, both of them are, but the one that i think i can fix is easier. i believe that the wax ring is shot.....
i've been looking online just to get an idea of what i'm in for, and i see that there are the typical wax rings and then there are non-wax rings - is there a significant difference, other than price? i'm assuming that it's just a regular wax ring under there now, but i'm not 100% sure.
these sites also say to replace the bolts at the same time - is that really necessary?
any tips would be appreciated...........
;D

Usually the bolts have to be replaced, because by the time the ring is gone, the bolts are shot too, and often end up having to be hacksawed off.
As for the difference in rings - no clue, sorry! I am used to regular wax ones.
Also sorry you have to deal with it - yucky dirty heavy-duty job!

Well crud - I can't listen at work! I can watch, but it doesn't show anything other than him taking it out of the box! (and my sound isn't working on the laptop at home, either - sucks.)
Can you tell me?

if the flange is up above floor level, just a wax ring will work. but if the flange is below the floor level, use the other kind (or 2 wax ones) so that it will set down into the pipe and not leak.
well crap........that means that i have to pull the freakin' toilet off before i can even decide what kind to get. that's so not what i wanted to hear at this point. but when i got home from jared's parent/teacher conference and saw how much more it had leaked, i've pretty much decided that this is something that's going to have to be done today.
this is not how i intended to spend my day, ya know?

If your Floor is Good, use the REGULR Wax Ring with the Rubber Flange Follow the Directions

i actually just talked to my ex (and he was nice to me, believe it or not) about it and he gave me some good info on our particular pipes......
so i guess that the first thing that i'm going to (attempt to) do is yank the toilet and see what it looks like under there. we gotta get it fixed, and fast, otherwise it's going to end up in the crawl/slither space.
of course, while i was down under there, i also figured out that the water lines to the tub are leaking somewhere, but they're virtually inaccessible by a normal human being.
and i've never been accused of being normal, so those will be next on the list.
hopefully i'll piss off all the spiders down there and they'll go away before i have to get in there again.

We had that same issue with the tub pipes - we had to actually cut a huge hole in the wall (which is still there by the way - I just hung a picture over it!). If you ever need to hire a plumber, they will require an access point.. ugh. May your bolts be kind!

I am going to pay a plumber to redo the old metal plumbing into PVC for the original bathroom in the house. Hopefully since everythng else is already PVC it won't cost tooo much.

ommfg.
so i pulled the toilet off. and i pulled the old nasty ring off.
problem is this....and i took pictures but can't seem to locate the camera at the moment.
the pipe comes up and forms a lip around the floor. when the bolts were installed, one of the bolts came up THROUGH that lip, lifting it and breaking it. the seal covered most of it, but not all. so water leaked out.
the floor on that side is totally rotted away. there is nothing to put a bolt through (the damned bolt fell through into the crawl space too). so i ripped up the carpet, ripped up the tile (omg can you say ancient?) and exposed the wood to see what i have to deal with. now, i'm going to take the pictures to the hardware store and see what they suggest.
ok, found the camera. pictures coming momentarily.

kinda hard to see, but on the bottom side of the lip, it's lifted, and there's NO wood under there to put another bolt in. after i ripped up the carpet (ugly) and the tile (uglier). of course, it's freakin' hardwood floors under there, so they should be beautiful like the rest of the house. instead, this is the crap i get.

Hey, you are in my upstairs bathroom doing exactly what I have been putting off doing! That reminds me, Goods, where the heck are you? And why aren't you renovating my bathroom?? Huh?? I think passing Goods the Handyman around is an excellent solution. ;D
