How does a teacher refrain from telling a parent what a jackass s/he is? works best under constant supervision = your kid is lazy needs to adhere to laboratory safety rules = kid is a cocky jackass is experiencing difficulty with the concepts = too dumb for this stream, should drop down to non-academic credit. is working to the best of their language ability = is ESL and trying hard, please don't beat them before the translator reads this to you. appears tired and satisfied with minimal effort = please get your child urine tested because I can not legally spell it out for you. I have lots more but it wouldn't be very professional of me to post them here....probably already hurt someone's feelings just with these ones;D

I use three comments: 1 = "Outstanding all-around student," 38 = "Please schedule a conference" (Translation: Your kid is on his way to Hell in a handbasket. Please help me help him. In six years of teaching I have never had a parent comply.) And for the totally hopeless, there is comment 16, "Has learned to draw."
I love my job. I'm not sure I'm any good, but I am certain that I make a majority of my students' day a little bit better. They tell me I'm good, but I won't know for another twenty years. If ever at all.

Well, I'm VERY impressed with my sons' teachers. I think teachers should make one heck of a lot more money. You guys ROCK!!

I tend to get annoyed when people think it okay to expect teachers to be saints. I'm not. I love my job, but sometimes I think it would be more effective to take a running start to jump through a brick wall. I get 180 hours a year with my kids if they have perfect attendance and I am supposed to work miracles?

there is supposed to be a ;D behind that...
anyway, i find it hard to believe that young kids can be THAT bad, and if they are, i dont think it is their fault. im not really talking about teenagers, im talking about young elementary school, and pre-school kids.

um... spend a week with a classroom of young kids, and you may change your mind.
though you're right. it isn't the kids' fault...

i agree it's not the kids' fault. just like it isn't the dog's fault he has rabies.
Parent teacher conferences are so depressing because so many questions are answered. "Oh so that's why he cowers whenever i raise my voice. . .. "

these comments you're mentioning are really disturbing, fre. do you report them? i mean if there is even a suspicion, you're required by law to do so, right?

yeah, im with jules, that stuff needs to be reported.
and just so its clear, i have 3 young kids, and have spent a lot of time in classrooms... and i still dont think its right for a teacher to call a 2 or 3 year old a 'little bastard' or any of the other things i have heard.

Yes, you ARE required by law - teachers are mandated reporters. I hope you are doing that, Fre... for the kids' sake. I was reading some statistics for class the other day - domestic violence crimes were highest in four states - one of the four was Michigan. These are the serious crimes, not the light stuff. Please report them.
