Ok - I'm annoyed. I met with the church to talk about my baby's baptism... I'm Catholic - and apparently, because I married someone outside the church (civil union), I have in essence turned my back on the church. ? Well FRIG me! I had no idea. So now, I can't receive communion! I'm not super religious, and mostly attend church maybe once a month out of family tradition ... but I"m sort of hurt and very very miffed. Oh - and because my husband has been previously married, and the catholic church doesn't recognize divorce.. well.. I'm married to a married man!

I'm definately considering switching. In all honesty, I'm not a traditional Catholic, so why attend there? Especially since I'm now a pariah. The only thing is I'd like my baby baptized Catholic so that she can attend Catholic school, should I so choose. It is where my 6 year old goes, and in many ways, it is a better school system (at least here in this city). Thanks for your input and support freck. For sure a change is a good suggestion...

Different priests also allow/disallow different things in their parish. My friend who is catholic, and divorced (not annulled) is able to take communion at her church. Her kids also go to the Catholic school. You should be able to find a priest who would be willing to baptize the babe. Some are just more "old school" than others...

maybe i can help you clear up some slight misconceptions? I'm Catholic - and apparently, because I married someone outside the church (civil union), I have in essence turned my back on the church. ? Well FRIG me! I had no idea. So now, I can't receive communion! no big deal. you just get your marriage blessed by the priest. it can even be done in the rectory. just make an appointment. i don't know if someone told you that by having a civil union you "turned your back on the church," but if they did, they are wrong. Oh - and because my husband has been previously married, and the catholic church doesn't recognize divorce.. well.. I'm married to a married man! it's not entirely true that the catholic church doesn't recognize divorce. was he married in the catholic church previously? if so, yes, he will need to get an annulment (through the church) prior to you two receiving the sacrament of marriage through the church. however if he was not previously married in the catholic church, an annulment is unnecessary.

as for the communion thing, i'm divorced, haven't gotten the annulment yet (though i think i'm going to go through with it, just so i'm not seen as married to my ex legally OR through my church), and i take communion.

I think I"m going to call a different catholic church and ask questions. Thanks guys for your feedback and support.
I thought the same as you jules - that if his marriage wasn't in the Catholic church (which is was not), then it wouldn't be recognized, and therefore would not need to be annuled.
sigh.
If I get more crappy treatment though, I may just switch to Anglican church. My friend goes there and raves about the support and warmth. I'm all about the warmth!
thnx my friends!

YES, call a different Catholic Church...
jules and i have had long talks about this and it TOTALLY depends upon the priest and your diocese. i got two different answers from 2 different churches and that was only the beginning...than i went to another state and it is a whole new set of rules.
good luck.

it TOTALLY depends upon the priest and your diocese. which is just too ironic since "catholic" means "universal." i think we're overdue for vatican III.

My kids were both baptized in the Catholic church and we weren't even married at the time. It all depends on how anal they are. Seriously though, there are still churches out there that are followers of Christ. The ones that remember it says judge not lest ye be judged. Do some looking around.

You should go to the *Church of Christ Thats where I go I think she might find a Church of Christ a little too far removed from what she's used to. I can say that, being raised Church of Christ myself. Think Southern Baptist, but twice as anal with no instrumental music...

Think Southern Baptist, but twice as anal with no instrumental music... I agree. I was raised Episcopal, so our pomp is not unlike the Catholic church. I now attend the neighborhood Southern Baptist Church which is 1/2 block away. It is a different world. Nothing says "the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ", like a shot of Juicy Juice.

I wasn't raised going to church. I tried MANY churches and LOVE the First Baptist Church.
I went to a Catholic Church. I had trouble with the being allergic to the inscense (how do you spell that?).
