Just had to share cause it warmed my heart...
On my lunch break, I ran to the bank...elderly woman in front of me and I are chatting about books (imagine that) and it is now her turn...
She asks to cash $26,000+ paid out to her in 100s...find out from her that it is her vacation payout on her last official day for her company. They had done away with year end bonuses the year before...she felt bad for her co-workers. She was taking the money back to divide among her co-workers...each will get over $2000 just as a thank you from her for her years spent there.
I told her she made my day...I really have been bombarded at the ugliness of the bureaucracy of my job of late...
;D

That is a GREAT story - what a wonderful woman! I'm sure her co-workers will truly appreciate it - I hope they pass it on!

Wow. I could think of a lot of other things to do with 26k than give it away. Shame on me.

If I may share another random act of kindness (which a couple of you already know about), upon finding out that I had a month's sabbatical coming up, and that my travel plans had fallen through, and funds were tight following the divorce, one of my former customers invited me to stay in their family's vacation home as their guest -- in a suburb of Cape Town (one of my favorite areas in the world), minutes from the beach and wine country, and only about 20 - 30 minutes from the city.
It's the nicest thing that has happened to me in over a year. I almost cried. And I am searching for flights!
I'm hoping I can find a way to pay it forward while I'm there.

That sounds so fun, Jules, and so nice to hear that something good has happened for you (I has been a pretty crappy time lately for you)....it must feel good to know that an old customer appreciates you, too.

Thanks, khart. Yeah, I admit my customers generally love me. Which really makes all the other work-related stuff bearable. I've been lucky to build relationships with some fantastic people around the world.

I'm sorry, RO. I didn't see your thread when I started mine. That woman is incredible. How lucky you were to meet her and witness her selflessness.
I wish I had the means to make huge contributions, but I've got to be content with those little things that some say add up.
I love to do random things for unsuspecting people and know they have no way of knowing where it came from. Somehow, it seems to bring the faith in mankind that so many of us thought was gone and buried.
I am so thankful to the people that came to my aid when I needed it. Somehow, God made sure a nurse coming off duty and a Dr going to the hospital were witnesses at my most recent accident. I have many jackets from those incredible people that had thrown them over me while I was in shock. I only wish I knew who they were and could return them with the gratitude I feel in my heart.
Life is so short and like RO said, 'Pay it Forward'. As a recipient, I am overwhelmed, I only hope I can make a difference for someone like they did me (ultimately, I hope they never have that unfortunate incident).
People are generally good. When the chips are down or the crisis manifests itself, people put their best first forward....like 9/11. Thank you for your kindness, love, selflessness...There is a fine line and having a meth addict for a brother, I know this first hand. It's hard to know when it's an act of kindness or enabling.
