I have been practicing Capoeira for a couple years now. For those who dont know what it is, Capoeira is a Brazillian Martial Art that was formed by slaves. It was disguised as a dance and acrobatics so that they could practice and fight without getting caught. To this day, Capoeira keeps it's roots and sparring sessions or "the game" as we call it is done in a "roda" or circle and accompanied by music.
So the other evening before class, my instructor told me that a group of students had started practicing Brazilian Jiu Jit Su at lunch and invited me to join. Now Jiu Jit Su is quite the opposite of Capoeira. Instead of "playing" and disguising attacks, Jiu Jit Su is a bit more aggressive and is mostly wrestling and submission holds.
I am totally hooked. One day of it and I can tell you, this makes Capoeira seem easy. My abs, shoulders and legs have not been this sore in a LONG time. I will keep up with my Capoeira training mostly for the coordination and kicking aspect of martial arts, but I will add Brazilian Jiu Jit Su to my training for the strength and ground work side of fighting styles.
To anyone that has thought of trying a martial art. I highly recommend Capoeira and or Brazilian Jiu Jit Su.

I've seen Capoeira classes before at the rec centre and it looked pretty cool....maybe a bit too intense for me though (especially right now).
From what I've seen Jiu Jit Su is definately too much contact for me....but maybe I just watched too high of a class...it kinda freaked me out.
I'm still very out of shape and trying to get back my strength after my surgery.....but I need something to mix it up a bit because at physio I am mostly just lifting weights and using bands and doing machine exercises ( No music so it is getting boring).
I saw the fall schedule at my rec centre has kickboxing classes starting in Sept so I think I'm going to sign up...it's beginner so it shouldn't be too much contact, right? I don't want to get my a** kicked or anything...hahaha.

I don't want to get my a** kicked or anything...hahaha. You are right, ju jitsu has ALOT of contact. In fact, it is mostly rolling on the ground attempting to get the better hold and end in some sort of submission. I did not know that some of my joints bent in the directions I have been forced into. You do have to get over the contact issue though. It was a bit uncomfortable for me the first class, but yesterday was my second class, and it went easier. You should try Capoeira though. Especially if it is a class in a rec center (free?). Most instructors are very good at recognizing new students, and the students are usually very good at helping newbies. Most of us would rather slow down our workout and help a newcomer than see someone have a bad experience. Capoeira is more about having fun than hurting someone. The workout can be as intense as you want it to be. No one would expect you to work out past your own level. Even when "playing" (sparring), it is up to the experienced player to make the inexperienced player look good. Because if the experienced player is tripping up or kicking the newbie, they look like the @ss.

sigh... my physiotherapist started laughing in my face when I said I wanted to take kickboxing and nixxed it until further notice. That's embarrassing...but it is best to be careful I know. So I signed up for Pilates.....which I've done before. I'm sure kickboxing or capoeira would be more fun but I have to be realistic I 'spose. At least it gets me out of the house right? And things really are going very well for me, thanks Mel
