why is a gay person allowed to say faggot, but a straight person not?
why is a black person allowed to say nigger, but a white person not?

I have no idea. I would think that if a word was so offensive then no one would use it in a joking manner.
The word c*nt is offensive to me....I don't jokingly call people I know this or use as a slang word.

Honestly, I don't like any of those words. Why it is used by the group is the same reason why "nerds" reclaimed that word. If you can say it yourself, "own" it, you can make it not a bad thing. It is like thumbing your nose at those who use it negatively and say - if this is me, then that must be a cool thing!
Honestly, those words are so charged, I wouldn't feel comfortable even if a member of those groups used it - and that includes women using the C word. Some words just currently have too much negative connotations.

Randal Graves: I disagree, man, she was just an old timer, that's the way people talked back then! It didn't mean they were racist... but my grandmother did refer to a broken beer bottle once as a nigger knife... you know, come to think of it, my grandmother was kind of a racist. Dante Hicks: You think? Randal Graves: Well, I still don't think porch monkey should be considered a racial term. I've always used it to describe lazy people, not lazy black people! I think if we really tried, we could re-claim porch monkey, and save it. Dante Hicks: It can't be saved, Randal! The sole purpose of its creation, the only reason it exists in the first place, it to disparage an entire race! And even if it could be saved, you can't save it because you're not black! Randal Graves: Well listen to you! Telling me I can't do something because of the color of my skin! You're the racist! I'm taking it back, you watch! [customers enter] Randal Graves: Hey, what can I get for you, you little porch monkey?... Its cool, I'm taking it back.

Umm, it's not much of a double standard. The only reason you'd use either of those two words against there intended targets would be to insult. I'm sure you could come up with something that was both more original and less incendiary.

its not a double standard for a gay person to call another gay person a faggot, but im not allowed to? in Savage Love the columnist is gay, and all the people write in starting with 'hey faggot' and he explains that to him it is not a deragatory term.

How would it offend you if a gay person called you a fag? It's a term that straight people use to insult gays. It would be a double standard if they were allowed to use the word on you and you weren't allowed to use it back. Same with the N word. They are derogatory terms that are used to hurt and insult. It really bothers you that you're not supposed to use them?

I need to ask. Do you honestly not realize how ignorant and offensive it is to refer to people that way? Or do you just not care?

No need to curb potty mouth! I swear too! I just don't use derogatory terms... Ah, hell, who am I kidding - I am PC to the max! LOL! I am more concerned with the INTENT behind it than what is said. My own example - my dad used to call me - very affectionately - a little pickaninny (usually as he petted my head and smiled at me). I didn't know until I was well into adulthood that it was a deragotory term about black children. He loves my curls, loves me, and said it lovingly. I assumed it was a GOOD thing. My dad is a terrible racist, who thinks black children are cuter than white children, how unfortunate that they need to grow up to be black adults. (Yes, my dad and I have clashed on this several times!) As horrible as pickaninny is - I can't see it as quite as bad, because in a way my dad "reclaimed" it by saying it with such affection. I think words CAN be reclaimed, but it still was hard on me when I found out what it meant! Shey

i would never say that to someone i didnt know, and who didnt know me. D is not offended in the least by my remarks... it just bothers me that so many things are taboo that shouldnt be. if the word offends you, then why do YOU say it?
