I believe this to be a pretty credible and serious threat that you should know about. So serious that Microsoft is offering $250,000 to you if you can identify the author of the virus. The worm is called “Conficker” and has already been mutated to its third strain, making it very difficult to find and remove. It is believed that the worm will be activated on April 1st; however, its cause it yet unknown. So far, they have found that this worm is installed on computers after users click on offers for fake software. In other words, software that really doesn’t exist, and will not work, but the website got you to click and download a file that is not the software you think it is, but the malware. An easy way to see if your computer has already been infected is to check the automatic Windows Update history. On a VISTA machine, you get there by going to Control Panel -> Windows Update -> View Update History. If your computer did not have any updates in March, your computer may be infected. On an XP machine, go to Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. At the top of the box, click the check box next to Show Updates. If you believe you might be infected, check out this CNN article. www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/03/24/conficker.computer.worm/index.html
