when I called my mom to check in today (she likes to make sure I'm alive every couple of weeks). My dad, like me, isn't much for phones, but apparently my mom was dumping one so he "had" to answer. (my mom's words) It was nice to talk to him for the first time since my parents went to texas for the winter.
I really respect and admire my dad even if i have no idea how to relate to him.

Nice that you had that chance to talk with your dad. Also good for you for knowing that you respect and admire him. Maybe tell him sometime? My mom was "checking in" with me every day for a while. Nice of her, but I had to finally tell her enough. I felt like I was away at sleepaway camp for the first time or something.

I agree with Freckles....dad's often like to give advice about how to fix things and how to do handyman types of stuff. My Dad loves to be helpful like that (especially now) and that's when he's chattiest....describing epoxy resins or some such. Some day maybe work it into the convo how you feel about him.
Sometimes I really do think mums get an unfair amount of kudos from their kids compared to dads....it's easy somehow to tell your mom she's great. Dads always get the Father's Day soap-on-a-rope and the awkward unfillable silences....and they worry just as much as moms do, they just don't phone all the time...and it's usually "Hang on and I'll get Mum" when you call there.
