I hope you don't mind my asking questions -- it's interesting for me to learn about this from people with experience in dealing with autism first hand.
In your opinion why is it that there are so many children diagnosed with autism in recent years? When I was going to school the only time I'd even heard about it was on one of those movies-of-the-week. Now it seems like there is a child with autism in practically every class in every school. Is it environmental? (Completely off topic, but I've wondered the same thing about food allergies. Again, when I was going to school it wasn't ever an issue. Now there is all this talk about peanut-free schools and such.)

Interesting question Jules, at this point there isn't a clear answer as to why the numbers are rising. Diagnostic tools are better, and the "umbrella" does cover more than ever before. That doesn't explain such a drastic increase though.
It is known that autism is partly genetic and is a closely related gene to ADD/ADHD. In a lot of cases there are family members with ADD or ADHD. It is believed that these genes lie dormant until there is an environmental trigger that sets them off. As each person is different, the environmental triggers are different. Allergies can play a part, but the true reasons are unknown at this point.
My oldest was never the same after his MMR vaccine. The changes were drastic and immediate. The ex and I were separated at the time. Buddy had the vaccine that week and when he brought Buddy back the first thing out of his mouth is what is wrong with Buddy.
Justus contracted a rare food poisoning at 9 months old and almost died. After some research i discovered that it attacks the same part of the brain that is effected by autism. Development from that time forward has been very slow for him.
There seems to be many causes of autism.

Kyle was "normal" until right after his MMR. I do think it is genetic, but triggered by the shots for Kyle.

my point exactly. While my son can speak and speak clearly he has trouble understanding language that is spoken to him. Buddy is just the opposite. Spoken language is extremely difficult, but he understands everything around him.

Kyle will figure out things visually that you wouldn't think he would get bc he is slow with the receptive language.
He recently saw me emptying a cath bag into the toilet. He laughed and said I was peeing standing up...I asked him whose pee it was and he knew whose it was. I was suprised.

As to the off-topic allergy thing - they think part of that is that we are "too clean". We kill off all the germs, don't let kids eat dirt, and get rid of all allergens, and the body has nothing to fight off. It then gets hyper-sensitive, and FINDS things to fight. They say don't use so much anti-bacterial stuff, because fighting things off is what builds immunity in young ones.

there does seem to be anecdotal evidence showing some kind of relationship between vaccines (MMR in particular) an the onset of autism.

We can't give alec a bath more than every other day bc of his allergies. Because baths are not part of our EVERY day schedule it upsets Kyle's day when we bathe him.
Once he is there all is good, but getting him there takes a lot of crying.
Any tips on teaching him how to blow his nose?
