And why?
Personally, I listen to NPR because it doesn't make me want to kill myself.
Do people actually watch the nightly news?

I prefer the newspaper but I've been lazy lately. Sadly, I get most of my news from The Daily Show and Fark. I can't make myself watch the nightly news. Too depressing.

I get most of my news from the radio as I drive to work (in morning) or via gossip from people at work (during the day). I rarely find time to watch TV anymore, and when I do I watch a movie for pure diversion....not the news as its too depressing and slanted anyhow. I stopped getting the paper as it was basically just going straight from my step into the recycling box....no time to read it.

I read at least one newspaper a day and I watch Channel 4 news. Its the only news that I (sort of!) trust to give the other side of the story.

I have the very local news channel on while I'm getting dressed in the morning (mostly for weather and to hear about any train delays though), and listen to the radio on the way to the station. I generally check out the NY Times online and CNN at some point during the day just to get a feel for anything major, plus people in the office talk. And a friend of mine is a news junkie so he IMs me links to stories he knows I'll find interesting as he comes across them during the day. My town puts out a free local paper once a week which I look through to find out what's happening very locally. I don't usually watch the news on television, however when I'm traveling I leave CNN on while I'm getting ready for the day just so I can feel more connected somehow while I'm away, and I do generally keep an eye on CNN on the tv at the gym while doing cardio, especially when there are major stories.
Why? Time. Or lack of it. And in the later evening when I do have down time I prefer to wind down and de-stress.
I do admit to being nostalgic for the breakfast table of my youth with the newspaper all over it and everyone passing sections around. Different time; different world.

Different time; different world. i remember walking out to the mailbox as my wet hair froze to get the Variety section of the Star-Tribune - My dad took the rest of the paper to work. Over breakfast I would read Dear Abby, Ann Landers, the comics, The Etiquette Lady, Erma Bombeck and on Thursdays, News of the Weird. And then I would walk the half mile to school without a hat or gloves or socks with an unzipped jacket. Why? Because I was cool.

Comics in a very specific order of what I liked least to what I liked most. And my hair froze at the bus stop. Where I waited with no hat or gloves and a jean jacket in the middle of winter. 'Cause I was cooler.

Our local paper comes out M-F. I read that. If something in the rest of the US is really important...it will be in there...everything else actually pertains to my town.

Put me on the "news is too depressing" bandwagon. I get some on the radio on the way to work, I look up stories on the internet if they are of particular interest, and I hear about stories from family/friends. Otherwise I try to avoid. Where is all the good news? How about more stories about people who SURVIVED bad crashes, or people-helping-people stories? Sigh.

I get mine from a plethora of sources (web sights) including but not limited to: CNN, Fox, MSNBC, DrudgeReport, DailyShow. I rarely watch the evening news just because I don't think about it. If I do turn on the TV for news reasons, I will probably go to CNN first and then to Fox.
