This, I think is one of the major issues with many organized religions.
First, let me say that I currently sit on the fence between being agnostic and atheist. I have taken a few religious studies courses throughout my academic career, so that is the basis of my statements. You can either take what I say or choose to ignore me. These are my opinions, nothing more.
I do not believe the Bible is the word of God. It was compiled by men based on scriptures written by men. They represent teachings, philosophies and laws of the time. Nothing in the Bible leads me to believe that if there is a God, that these are the words he spoke.
The church is a corporation. Vatican city is the RICHEST sovereign country in the world. Why, because people (believers) all over the world pay the Catholic Church for "guidance". Your $500 for an annulment is meant to do two things. 1) Prevent you from getting a divorce in order for the church to maintain its stance that divorce is wrong. And 2) make money for the church.
Requirements for the annulment are there to shame you into not going thru with your plans. The church cares not whether you are happy or safe, as long as your actions do not go against what they preach. Catholicism seems to be based on shame. Its teachings are old and out of date.
How hypocritical is it of the church to cover up and pay off scandals while telling you that you must jump thru hoops in order to end your marriage in the eyes of the church.
I say, search yourself for your true spiritual home. If you get a divorce, you are legally no longer married. Do not worry what the church thinks. There are many ways and places to worship and show your love of God. Do not depend on an organization / corporation to tell you what is right and wrong.
You have your reasons for wanting a divorce. Whether I, your priest, your neighbor, your family knows or understands is irrelevant.
Logically, if you believe in God, and you believe he is all knowing, he knows why you need out, and will understand.
