Your fallacy, Steve, lies with defining your initial accusation as a negative. It's not - you're declaring that an untruth exists. If your statement was more along the lines of "we can never know the truth", or "I'll never accept that her story is true", that would be an unprovable negative.
So, by your reasoning, since you're asserting the presence of a lie, it's up to you to prove that lie exists.

On topic, I think the bigger idea is why assert something is untrue unless it does some good? Why TRY to debunk Santa, call someone out? If you are saying something negative about someone, without having factual data to back it up, it is just a negative situation all around. Whether something exists or not, saying it is untrue is just not really a good idea. Try telling someone their god doesn't exist (the ultimate unprovable). Neither side can prove or disprove, and what is the point of pushing the issue? Even if something IS provable or disprovable, being negative about someone - especially about lying - just doesn't help.

The whole reason I perpetuate the Lady J controversy is because I hope for something...anything...some scrap of information about her..that I can savor...I can add it to the pictures of her on my wall...and just maybe...someone will slip and give me enough information so I can cancel patients for a weekend, hop on a plane to Canada...track her down...and do the nasties to her.
