Lumpy, I am from Australia and by "no way" do the aboriginals assimulate! They get more benefits than what your native americans do. I am not racist, however, I do not feel sorry for them in anyway! Infact, some part of me wishes I was an aboriginal, just so I could receive their benefits! Um, if this is true why did your new PM just recently issue a formal apology to Aboriginals for your country's assimilation policies? I just recently visited your country and everyone I spoke with thought this was a wonderful thing, albeit far overdue.

George Carlin's Solution to Save Gasoline
Bush wants us to cut the amount of gas we use.....
The best way to stop using so much gas is to deport 11 million illegal immigrants!
That would be 11 million less people using our gas. The price of gas would come down.....
Bring our troops home from Iraq to guard the Border....
When they catch an illegal immigrant crossing the border, hand him a canteen, rifle and some ammo and ship him to Iraq ...
Tell him if he wants to come to America then he must serve a tour in the military....
Give him a soldier's pay while he's there and tax him on it.....
After his tour, he will be allowed to become a citizen since he defended this country.....
He will also be registered to be taxed and be a legal patriot.....
This option will probably deter illegal immigration and provide a solution for the troops in Iraq and the aliens trying to make a better life for themselves.. ....
If they refuse to serve, ship them to Iraq anyway, without the canteen, rifle or ammo.....

I have no clue what it's like for them now, but in the 30's and 40's your government treated them rather brutally. Part of that treatment involved a fairly insidious attempt to indoctrinate their children. Have you seen Rabbit Proof Fence? Can you really blame them for not wanting to assimilate? www.imdb.com/title/tt0252444/Grrr... Don't get me started on this... I am still trying to come to terms with our fucking stupid "new" prime minister saying sorry, for something he and none of the current generation had anything to do with! Now they want friggin compensation!!!!! Bit late!

I hope the people you spoke to are from the Nothern Territory or Far Queensland, as these are the people who are truly affected by the aboriginal community. It's easy for me to sit in my city appartment and say how fantastic our prime minister is for saying sorry... Unfortuantely it's far too late to be saying sorry!

My friends are from Melbourne, and described to me exactly what Australia did to the aboriginals - how many tribes were eradicated, how few remain, how the only way the wholesale slaughter stopped was to use "cruelty to animals" laws - since they weren't considered "human" (even we in the way-backwards US did better than that!). Oh - and don't forget that their lands were stolen, their way of life removed, their way of supporting themselves... So I think it is ABOUT TIME your PM FINALLY apologized for what was done - you can't forget your own history because you are comfy with the way things are now. And you are right, the survivors shouldn't get benefits - they should get their land and way of life back... Wait, you mean you can't give up your cities, businesses, YOUR way of life? You can't restore the land, the culture, the artifacts, the lost oral traditions? So what do you think COULD pay for that? Your money will never be enough - just as ours won't - to make up for history or the ongoing fact that we can't restore it and aren't willing to "leave and go back where we came from" (which is what we tell new immigrants to the US). But maybe it will help start a new path, and you, like so many Americans, begrudge that??? You who only live there now, make money for your taxes, etc, because you live on STOLEN property, think you can't pay a little back rent?
As for our "reservations" - those piece of crap junk bits of land that were reluctantly given to the few remaining survivors of the plague, despair, destruction of way of life, forced marches and ongoing GENETIC predisposition to alcoholism and diabetes (as well as disposed towards it due to discrimination, poverty, family history and racial despair) plus more that we have done - those reservations just prove how little we were willing to concede of land that never started in our hands, and that we have done our best to destroy ever since.
And the Latinos? You mean those people doing the labor that most of us won't do for wages we wouldn't work for and are more glad of the opportunity than we are? Or do you mean the educated ones that come to this country and suffer immense discrimination? You mean the ones that often pay gov't taxes through TINs or fake social security numbers even if they are here illegally? And sales tax everywhere? And create businesses? And do the best for their families until they are taken on raids while their children wait panicked at home for their parents? I think this country has forgotten its own roots - and how many waves of immigrants were treated to the same "you are less because you weren't always here" idiocy. It has forgotten the railroads that were built by the Chinese immigrants who were then hustled into essentially concentration camps (without the death chambers) for YEARS. How Mexican-Americans and transient workers are the reason we have such large farms and can afford what they grow. We use them, then cast them out - and claim they took from us! Took what, crap for wages? Oh- but don't use Wal-Mart products because they use cheap labor in other countries!
This thread was started to cause trouble. I had hoped people would just stay off of it rather than feed into it, but apparently the opportunity to discuss what was "stolen" from us gets everyone's goats. Cause yeah, we are so damn poor. And yeah - we have NO services here. And yeah - we have to give so much to THOSE WE STOLE IT FROM! And btw - VERY LITTLE support comes from the gov't. VERY LITTLE money is made by casinos. Most Natives are DIRT POOR. As are most Latinos. Not because they are stupid, not hard workers, etc... But in large part because of the ongoing attitudes/jokes like I have seen here. Anyone wants to argue with me about this stuff - HAPPY to - and happy to provide real statistics, studies, examples - and will get more if you need them. Just NOT on here anymore. I can't stand this garbage.
Enough IS enough!

I can't stand this garbage. Enough IS enough! Shey Please ask your friends from Melbourne to forward me their findings please? Melbourne - I am sorry Sheyd and I am not purposely disrepecting you, however, your friends are in "Melbourne"! Try asking people from N.T, central Qld about the aboriginal community! I don't judge American natives based on what my friends tell me, I just don't comment as I have not seen this first hand. I will give you one experience I had, this was about 18 months ago. I went to visit a client, 3 klms from the CBD. I parked the car and had to walk approximately 800 metres from the carpark to my clients, trendy up- market address. Upon my walk (800 metres mind you) there was a little manicured, park bench, semi garden area next to the car park. As I walked there were approximately 8 aboriginals sitting around this area, drunk and maybe stoned (have no idea) it started with burping ( I ignored it) and then one of the guys came within metres of me... I started increasing my speed, he spat at me and on me and called me a "stupid white bitch - who thought I was better than him"! Well great, gee.... I did nothing Sheyd. That is my first "close" experience with an aboriginal. I had "no" impression or prejudice and did not believe the media and generalisations. Now, I believe 100%. The city behaviour is nothing compared to the serious problems in regional areas in outback Australia.
