Because Wright isn't the candidate - Obama is. I'm sorry, but I fail to see where attending a controversial pastor's church implies an endorsement of that pastor's politics. As was mentioned earlier, people attend a particular church for a lot of reasons, and I doubt the politics of the preacher are very high on that list. Probably looks different from your view from behind the grassy knoll, though, Fluff. Bing-Bing-Bing! Right answer, sportsfans! I really don't see how this implicates Obama. You can't hold him responsible for his Pastor's beliefs. and since most of the citizens of this great wonderful country cant be bothered to learn about the REAL issues, crap like this is what they latch on too.. of course he is a democrat so he is not worth a damn anyway

questioning Obama's ethics have plenty of merit. There is a lot more at stake here than just a 10 percent sales tax. Completely agree. Ethics are important, and the question must be raised. And I don't think he's a saint, by any means. Of course, I doubt a saint would make a good president. I just haven't seen any issues that rise above typical campaign mudslinging into something that would cause me genuine concern about the man's character. In fairness, I haven't seen any issues about any of the candidates that lead me to think they're anything other than people of solid character. So given that "character" is, IMO, a level playing field, I'll probably cast my vote based on other factors.

It's one thing if a corrupt politician with a bad track record and the "machine" behind him screws up Cook county, but it's another when they are heading a world superpower. Cook County corruption? Don't get us started...

So if someone Plays Checkers with Adolf Hitler and has Picnics with Hitler at the Park That should be of no concern ? Yeah I agree Lumpy. There is no way i could have sat thru 20 minutes of that preacher's style of sermons and knowing full well the things that he supports much less 20 years. This minister IS a racist. The fact that Obama has been a faithful follower and SOUGHT HIM OUT when he moved to Chicago disturbs me. A great deal. My ex's family was very religious. Christians who were in church whenver the door's were open. I went to the church once because I was constantly being coerced and badgered. Sat down and left after 20 minutes when he was up there screaming about good people don't make it to heaven and it's not enough to live a good life... I walked out. We typically do not attend sermon's if the person is not someone we admire and whose views we do not embrace. My ex in laws DID embrace that preacher because his views reflected their own. I couldn't even listen to him for 20 minutes because his views were so out of sync with mine it made me ill.

For those who had concerns about this issue, he addressed it himself yesterday in what I think was a damn good speech. my.barackobama.com/page/content/hisownwordsThere's video and transcript. I actually couldn't watch the video, because conspicuous use of teleprompters makes me nuts, but I did listen. It is a long speech, but worthwhile if you have the time. Freck, he uses some big words in it, so it may not be for you. I think based on this speech, I'm done riding the fence - I'm firmly in Obama's corner.

I just think he did a great job framing this small issue in the larger context of who he is and why he is running. He explained his attachment to this pastor to my satisfaction, without overemphasizing its importance.
I'd be interested in other reactions, though, from others willing to take the time to listen to/read it.

He didn't throw his pastor under the bus for one thing . Big props for that. He pretty much said what most of the level headed folks here did. Do you agree with all the political views your pastor/preacher holds? I liked the way he's handled it.

im sorry... but i just dont agree. maybe its where i live i dont know... there are so many racist black people in this area... and for the most part it is all consuming. meaning, they talk about it quite frequently, not just once in a while, so i have a hard time believing this was a 'once in a while' type of sermon. racism is alive and well in america, and maybe more so in the south... its just not something we take so lightly i guess... there is no way i would be willing to sit thru anyones sermon who felt that way. I AM TIRED OF LIVING IN A COUNTRY THAT MAKES ME FEEL GUILTY BECAUSE I AM WHITE.
