Can we blame kids for loving the instant visual gratification and stimulation of these high end videogames of today? I mean... to play marbles and jacks took some effort.... you had to find neighborhood kids and everyone had to learn to play. Today... who wants to go outside???

One of our three doesn't like games, but sits with the other two while they play and plays with toys. He doesn't like to play with others.
Any day the weather is nice I require the boys play outside at least for a few hours. They play every sport when it is in season. None of them are fat or even pudgy.
Their father and I play the games with them. We have tons of fun bonding while playing.
We also coach their teams and play outdoor stuff with them. I love to ride my bike, I sure hope he learns soon so he can start riding a lap or two with me at the park.

Weight was not a factor when I posted this thread. I played sports my entire life... we had fat kids on our teams that played just as hard as the rest of us. Weight is too big an issue in my opinion.
My only point is that when I was a kid we built forts, tried to dig to china, rode skateboards and bikes, played interactive games like over the line and capture the flag. You would have had to chain me to the ground to keep me inside. My grandma used to come out with a broom to chase us in if we stayed out after dark.

I don't let my kids run up and down the road with neighbor kids...too dangerous.

I was trying to figure out what had changed in the past 20 years... I figured it was due to increased traffic and/or perverts.

Did anyone else have the rule that when the streetlights came on, it was time to head home? It's kind of nice that it's still that way in my neighborhood. Kids play in the street, only pausing to yell "car" when a car is approaching. Would have been nice to raise a family here.

i had that same rule too...and i wonder why the kids in my neighborhood don't follow that rule.
if i had grown up in this size of city that i am in now...i wonder how my parents would have reacted.
i grew up in a town of 1200...so it is A LOT different.

My kids pretty much live outside. My boy is getting pretty damn good at boarding (maybe even surpassing the old man in my prime shhh don't tell him) and my daughter hangs with him or her friends. They also can play rock band like freakin maniacs and are honor roll students. So I think there is a balance between everything.

balance is a shifty term... but kids do need balance.
