I have been seeing more than the usual number of movies these past few months, because my girlfriend enjoys them, and heck, there really hasn't been much else to do during the winter.
I was starting to lose my respect and hope for the movie industry, as per my last few reviews on this subforum.
I am happy to report that there are still some movies worth watching. Tonite, it was her turn to pick and even though I wanted to see 2000 BC or whatever year it was, or the Doomsday movie about yet another virus outbreak, or the one about the teens fighting for the girl, she won out and we saw Vantage Point, starring Dennis Quaid as a secret service agent assigned to protect the US President during a summit meeting in Spain.
Without any spoilers, let me say that there was of course an assassination attempt as per the previews, but there are several twists and turns which are not expected, even by the most avid and perceptive movie goer, such as myself.
This movie is done in an unusual way, as with "Ground Hog Day", almost the entire movie is the same opening sequence, the same 15 minute action sequence repeated at least 6 times, but from the perspective of different people, so more information is obtained each time, and then you go into the final half hour or so completely armed with the information you need to enjoy the fast paced and suspenseful ending, which leaves the viewer feeling satisfied at the end.
Except for the fact that the repetative sequences left me at times thinking, oh no here we go again, the movie was done very well, and I recommended it to anyone who likes a fast paced movie, with some violence and a good solid, believable plot.
Vantage Point. In theatres now.
