This place has been draining my soul since I got here. None of the promises made to me were true and I have been floundering.
I don't know if it will happen, but I've started looking for work out of state.
Part of me is terrified, these kids are counting on me and I am all they have left. What if this doesn't work out?

If you are unhappy in your current location, moving sounds like the most logical step. Best of luck with the job search.

If it doesn't work out, can things be any worse?

Just really research all the options. Make sure you are running TO instead of running FROM.
Good luck!

PS. Have you had someone take a look at your resume and go over interview skills? Returning to the job market can be tough at ANY locations - and those two things can make or break your reentry.

Part of me is terrified, these kids are counting on me and I am all they have left. What if this doesn't work out? Conversely, what if you stay where you are, where you know it's not working out?

Part of me is terrified, these kids are counting on me and I am all they have left. What if this doesn't work out? Conversely, what if you stay where you are, where you know it's not working out? First off, I can't find work here. The economy is so tight and there is really nothing in my industry. Secondly, this place is draining our souls and doesn't offer the things we like and value.
