...only to find out there's a catch?
Got a letter in the mail a couple of months ago from the state treasurer's office - said there was "unclaimed property" in my name. Filled out the necessary paperwork and forgot about it. Got a letter back the other day saying that there's a little over $1800 left in an escrow account for the house I used to own.
The catch? It's in both our names. So now there's a legitimate reason to break over 6 years of no contact. If it was more like $100, I might be inclined to just let it lie, but it's enough money that I'll at least make the attempt.
It took a little doing to pick up the phone and call the ex-in-laws yesterday. I suspect they're still in Florida, so I probably won't hear back from them until May.

That sounds like it could have potential for trouble, but if you keep it business like and know that you won't need to have contact again, it should be fine.
