ditto. i moved out when i was 21 and never even considered returning home.
i don't know if this trend is a sign of the state of our wretched economy, or more that people are living above their means and not prioritizing saving for a rainy day like they did in the past. thoughts?

I moved out at 17 and never looked back.... I don't have credit cards. I make sure that money is put away each month... hubby made sure the kids had college accounts set up when they were little.... but, if either of us lost our job right now we would go under in about 1 1/2 years. I am thankful for what I have.
The funny thing is my friends all think we have so much money because we never are hurting or declaring "broke" but, I save and I plan. That works.

I started on my own very young too, raising a kid as well. I don't have an available net now but I could never imagine going back. I would tar , feather, drown AND shoot myself first too.

but if you lost your job you'd get some kind of compensation package, right? it's rather likely that i may end up getting laid off at some point this year, but if i do, i'll continue to get full pay and benefits for at least 6 months which i'd hope would be enough time to find something else.

btw, i'm so impressed by those of you who raised kids while so young. i don't know how you did it. i could barely support myself when i was in my early twenties, nevermind even consider being able to support a child.

The benefits are there though. You are forced to grow up fast. You learn a great deal about yourself and life. You cannot afford to have your life be about me me me me. It is also nice to be fairly young when they are grownup. btw, i'm so impressed by those of you who raised kids while so young. i don't know how you did it. i could barely support myself when i was in my early twenties, nevermind even consider being able to support a child.

i've no doubts there are benefits. i just can't even imagine how one does it. i barely had money for groceries when i was starting out. a child is expensive. i have a lot of respect for those of you who managed to figure out how to do it.

I just meant if the economy really took a dive and either of us, especially the hubby, was absolutely unable to find a job then it would really pull the rug out from under us.

How does the saying go? Most of us are just two paychecks away from homeless? but if you lost your job you'd get some kind of compensation package, right? it's rather likely that i may end up getting laid off at some point this year, but if i do, i'll continue to get full pay and benefits for at least 6 months which i'd hope would be enough time to find something else. and with the social security issues... is everyone who didn't invest wisely going to wind up being 80 years old working at McDonalds?
