Drinking in moderation doesn't require drunkenness. I still have a drink or two occasionally - I also enjoy wine-tasting events. The title of this thread is people who use alcohol to think with... that is a state of being drunk. It isn't about having a drink or two, and I doubt even Freckles would have a problem with someone who only rarely and only safely has a one-night binge.
I have known MANY happy drunks - people I enjoy a whole ton more when they are drunk than when sober - but what does that say about them?
What does it mean when half our society doesn't think they can have a good time without being drunk - or who think the answer to not being able to face whatever problem can be found at the bottom of an alcoholic stupor?
My dad can't drink now, but his excuse was that it "helped him talk to people". Ok - so drunk you can talk (half of which isn't the truth) but how does that help social skills AT ALL? Where does that leave him when his health conditions made it so he couldn't drink so much?
Most of the time people get drunk, they would be better off if they didn't. They end up more depressed, or doing something stupid, or sick the next day. How many of the people on ojar did I hear talk about how they weren't supposed to drink alcohol because of their medical conditions but did it anyway because they couldn't face the world? Did it make it better when they woke up the next day? How many spent money to get drunk several times when they couldn't afford it? How many drunk-dialed an ex, did something for revenge, or got suicidally depressed because they were drinking? It lowers inhibitions and is a depressant, but people have no problems "prescribing" it to a depressed person who is having a tough time.
You know- I don't mind being called preachy, because I too am sick of the atmosphere of complete acceptance of a drug that causes and has caused so much harm to people. Sure - in moderation it is fine, in fact a glass of red wine is good for you! What freckles and I have a problem with, though, is that moderation is NOT what is practiced OR preached by most of society! I don't understand how people can know how many drunk drivers cause accidents, how many families are torn apart, how much freakin' EVERYDAY harm comes from this total alcohol acceptance and still defend excesses?!
I have shared a drink with a few people on here - I don't demonize alcohol - but I too am sick of the idea that alcohol is any kind of cure or drunkenness is a great way to be. You want to get drunk? I'll be your designated driver, I will watch out so you don't drunk-dial, I will even clean up your puke and make sure you drink water and take an aspirin before you go bed. But if you are doing it because you want to escape your problems, they will still be there in the morning. So will I, cause I am still your friend, but eventually you have to deal with it all, and time has a way of catching up with us.

dictionary.reference.com/browse/alcoholismGetting drunk every now and then doesn't make you an alcoholic, Freckles - it requires repeated behaviors of excess - not singular incidences. Of course, someone may only get drunk once in their life, but if they do it and then drive, they can still kill someone...

Drink them all in 1 Day = Alcoholic (Every Payday or as long as they have money)

I refer to the old joke that says (paraphrased)...I'm a drunk, alcoholics have to go to classes!
Seriously though, Freckles, I can see where you are coming from, and the bitterness that you have toward people that use alcohol. You have intimated many times about your ex-wife, her abuse of alcohol, and the destructive and offensive behaviors she had when drinking.
But there are many, many, people that drink alcoholic beverages, sometimes more than 2 or 3 or 6 in a sitting, that are not raging maniacs.
I know PLENTY of people who don't touch a drop of liquor, that are far more annoying, mean, or obnoxious than some of the drinkers I know. It is a bit unfair to paint everyone who chooses to drink, as alcoholics, and as somehow less than those who choose not to drink.
Just my opinion.

That may be true there are Drinkers who dont Drink to much and bring bad things to everyone around them
But, it is allso true that there are many who Drink and bring Bad AND blame the people around them for the Drunkerds actions
Or they Blame the Alcohol
The very first time they blame the Alcohol for ANYTHING they should look in the Mirror

Freckles, my man, there are more people in this thread that I've drunk dialed, then there are that I have not. Now, yes, I crawled into a bottle for a while. Yes, I got a little stupid. Yes, I crawled back out again. I have between 2 and 6 beers a night, after my 10 hour work day, and after my 2 hours of farm chores. I don't go out looking for trouble, I don't beat my wife, I don't kick my dog. I kick back, play a little Tiger Woods 08, and mellow out. Am I an alcoholic? Do I have a drinking problem?
I don't think so! Booze has never kept me from work, or family. It's never been the first thing on the grocerie list, but it is always on the grocerie list. I don't do drugs, not even the persgriptions for the pain killers my DR. wants me to take. I smoke a pack a day, and I enjoy my beer and bourbon. Thats me, either you love, or you hate me, but thats me.

Memo -- scratch the bong from the gift list. Unless it's a beer bong, of course...
