this day will always be your day. you would have been 93 today. i like to think that you're better off whole in heaven than a decrepit old lady on earth. maybe even doing things you love, like windows. (i still say that's just crazy! sorry, gram, your love of housework definitely did not rub off on me. )
i miss you so much, but i also know that you're with me all the time. i know i wouldn't have been able to get through this horrible year without you. thank you for lending me your strength until i could find my own. thank you for your example of living with grace and dignity. thank you for being a strong, independent woman, especially after having come of age in a time when that wasn't considered a womanly virtue. more than once i remembered your remarking to me things along the lines of "i was married once -- that was enough. i'm happier now" -- even when turning down suiters in your 70s. oh, gram, you were a hot ticket when you were young (and you really should have accepted that modeling job offer! just think you could have been famous!) and you were a hot ticket throughout your life. i can only hope i've inherited half of your spunk and good humor and ability to draw people to you. (now if only i'd inherited your legs!)
you remain the most beautiful part of my life. i know neither of us could have predicted all this, just like so many things in life. but please continue to guide me with your inspiration and your incredible love. i'll continue to carry you in my heart always.
