From the Richmond Times Dispatch: A Petersburg parent has filed a lawsuit against the Petersburg School Board seeking $5,000 after the city changed the time of the high school's graduation. Alfreda Payne filed a lawsuit against the School Board on Monday seeking $5,000 to replace the invitations she had made for her son's graduation, as well as for "pain and suffering." Two weeks ago, the School Board changed the graduation time on June 6 from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. The last of Payne's three sons is graduating, and she had already ordered a 25-invitation package with the 6 p.m. time, she said. She has to ask for a day off from work without pay because of the time change, and the change will cost the family pain and suffering because relatives can't get off work to come to the graduation, she said. School officials have no comment on the lawsuit. www.inrich.com/cva/ric/news.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2008-05-20-0163.htmlHonestly, I can see the problem with the invitations, but the pain and suffering Its too bad the family can't take off work, but they can still celebrate together later that evening.

I hope it gets laughed out of the court. I consider myself fairly progressive, but I really do think we are lawsuit crazy. Sometimes life just doesn't go your way, but it doesn't always merit legal action.
They should have sent an irate letter or nasty phone call to the school board, and let it end there.

In my local paper one of the hottest debates was about a guy who sued the owners of a dog that ran out in front of his car and got killed. Apparently it broke the grill of his car and went into his engine and caused damage. The purebred dog had slipped past his owners, and was killed in the accident. It really divided the readers - IS a dog owner responsible for an accident that happens like that? (The dog was not habitually running loose, either - this was an accident all the way around).

this idiot obviously doesn't know that the legal definition for pain and suffering is actual pain and suffering.
i can see requesting reimbursement for the cost of the invitations. the rest is just greed, plain and simple. i hope she becomes the laughingstock of the court and the community.
i am so sick and tired of selfish, greedy, self-centered people. the fact that it's so common is a sad reflection on our society.

Personally, I think she deserves more than 5,000.00. This is obviously a racially motivated attempt to keep a family from gathering together to celebrate, what could be, a once in a lifetime event.
This woman should not only be awarded at least 10 times that much, but should also receive a public apology for this heinous crime against her family.
