We are looking for a new baby kitten, now that we are down to one cat. We have looked at 4 local shelters - most of them twice, some more. I have been watching petfinder and craigslist for a month now. We were supposed to get one last Saturday, but couldn't agree on one and ran out of time, then the girls left for their daddy's for a week. We have it narrowed to three - with the possibility open to getting two. Here's where I am probably being stupid... I FELL IN LOVE with this kitty picture... www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11080822&mtf=1 It really is as small as it looks, and although they probably won't stay that way, it really does have blue eyes. Trouble is - it is 73 miles away. Is that too far to drive for a kitten when there are so many that need homes around here? And when I may not even love it like I think I would when I get there? This is a 20 year commitment, to me. I will only get so many kittens in my lifetime, maybe two - four more? I want it to be one I am SUPER sure about - will I regret not even SEEING this one? Or am I just being stupid to want to go that far?

My Cat sits by the Door when it wants out And it Meows when it wants back in

My cats are indoors only... Life expectancy of an outdoor cat is approximately 7 (number skewed a bit by young kittens who die easier) while indoor is in the high teens. 'Sides- you didn't say if it was worth it to drive 1 1/2 hours to see if you like a certain kitty?

If you like it, I don't think it's silly! It's a big commitment! If you want it, go for it. Sometimes something just clicks and you just have to roll with it.

ARGH!!!! So, I think it is all worked out, we can go there tomorrow, take her home if she is what we want (they said in their first email response that she was adoptable!) and it would be just a choice. Now, turns out she isn't done being vetted, and we can't pick her up until next week! We can SEE her now - and wait if she is what we want - but that means another trip back down! Except that we were going to be able to get the other kitties tomorrow. ARGH!!!! Btw - this is the pic of the one that Harry most wants... I still want Suri, dangit!

Well, they emailed me back - they approved the adoption paperwork, and have agreed to send her home with us tomorrow if we want her! So, we go down tomorrow - I leave work at noon. That means we still have time before the end of the day to pick up one or both of the other two most promising kittens if we don't get Suri (or even if we do). My preference would be (assuming I like Suri) that we would get her and the cuddly tabby (he sleeps with a teddy bear!) who is 12 weeks old. Harry prefers the champagne colored one above - and I want to be fair, so it is likely we will get the one Harry likes and one of the ones I like. Either way - we bring our kitty or kitties home tomorrow!!! Woo-hoo! More pictures to come!

Male Cats Spray Stink when they get big (And you have to use Freebreeze on everything when they do that)
Female Cats dont do that

Actually, if you neuter a male cat, particularly when they are young, they don't spray. I FIRMLY believe in spaying and neutering, one visit to a pound should convince anyone to do that.

female cats are worse sprayers then males! Males only spray in specific marking situations.....females will spray, like Phyxius says, because they want to piss others off, or if they want to attract hotties that they see walking around outside the window, or if they want to be the only one in the litterbox, if they are anxious... It's often impossible to get them to stop once they start.
If you neuter a male cat before he ever once sprays (young as 8 weeks) he won't know about marking territory and won't do it. End of story. My low-on-the-totem pole fixed male will sometimes twitch his tail like he's going to, if he's in a new location, situation....but nothing comes out -thankfully!

My wife and I drove 274mi from Cincinnati to Nashville one weekend to just "look" at a dog. Of course, we adopted him. It was actually a really great experience, more trips like that and we might still be married.

Well, we didn't get Suri - we took home her brother, Sergio. He is all black, with a white tummy, and TINY. He was the first of the siblings out of the cage, was extremely playful, but also is snuggly as the day is long. They estimate them at about 5 weeks old - they got them a week ago and the babies had no clue about how to eat regular food. Someone had backed a truck up to a tree in an old couple's yard and just dumped these four babies (who were really too young to be away from mommy).
We also got the tabby that I don't have a picture of - but I am less sure about keeping him, now that we have him home. I think he was so quiet and sweet because he HATED being in the cage. He was a bit hungry and I think dehydrated - but I think he was doing that to himself because of the cage. Now he is still lovey sweet - purrs if you touch him, but he is PSYCHO kitty! He jumps around on everything- including scaring the tiny baby half to death! When HE wants you to pet him, he comes and is the BIGGEST lovey - so I know when he is out of his kittenish phase he will be a dolly... and he is just gorgeous - a silver and black tabby, his back mostly black - he will be a beautiful cat. But he isn't very lovey now, and he is so wild - and he is trying to escape out of the bedroom they need to stay in for a few days...
Think we are still getting the ginger, though, not sure.
