My honest opinion? How about we put a large tax on people that are over their BMI? (Body Mass Index)
Let's put a tax on any fattening food served at a restaurant...things such as fettucine alfredo or chicken fried steak should be taxed even higher. If your belly hangs over your belt...open up your wallet, cause you're a lard ass.
Does that sound right? No. Smokers make the choice to smoke, but overeaters, or people who don't care about what the put into their body FOOD wise, also make unwise choices, and should be taxed as such.
Hey, I'm just a taxpayer, but it makes sense to me. Tax things that should be taxed, but these sin taxes are out of hand.

I wa thinking it is a sure way to get the money. Smokers will pay whatever they have to pay because they are addicted. I quit smoking for 16 years and started a few years ago. I'll pay the tax because I have to have my fix.
The extra .62 cents might make me think about quitting, but its not going to happen today.

When you smoke Small particles of pure black Tar (Just like Road Tar or Roofing tar) Are in the Smoke It sticks to your Lung Tissue And the small amount of Nicotine is absorbed into your body (Its how you get your Fix of Nicotine) Only Problem is That Small Bit of TAR is still inside you And you Smoke agan And ANOUTHER small Bit of Black TAR sticks to the inside of your Lungs And ANOUTHER And ANOUTHER And ANOUTHER ETC ETC ETC ETC and On and On Until Lung Cancer Kills You in about 5 or 10 Years And Your Family is Sad you are Dead They Mourn Then they Bury You with Lungs so Full of Black Tar There must be a Gallon or Two of ROOFING/Road Black Tar in those Lungs You could Donate that TAR to Fill a Hole in the Road or a Roof Marginal Information from me

Um, in case anyone hasn't noticed, the country is in serious financial trouble. The only way to increase the country's income is via taxes. Personally, I think luxury taxes are a great place to start. I am in favor of them.
Hey soupnazi, absolutely, increase the taxes on fast food. Regardless of how fat or thin their customers are (deciding who does and doesn't pay taxes based on weight is stupid), it's certainly not a necessity for anyone, and the slight increase in price isn't going to make much of a difference.
I'd be willing to pay an extra 50 cents for my Starbucks coffee.

Jules, exactly my point, at least as far as taxing the food goes.
I don't necessarily agree with increasing taxes to fund social programs though. No one is going to say "no kid, you can't have insurance"...but putting a high tax on 20% of the population, that are statistically already the lowest wage earners, is not the way to do it.
It's easy to do it though, because 80% of the population says "ooh those nasty smokers, this will teach 'em!". If 60% of the population said that they wanted the other 40% overweight people to fund it, there would be an audible outcry.
It is a nasty habit and an addiction, and yeah, I'm a smoker. But I am trying to look at this objectively and fairly. Why not add a 1.5% sales tax increase to every sale of any product in this country? It would fairly affect everyone, across the board, based on their decision to buy a product or service, and I would think, bring in far more funds.

The sales tax where I live in TENNESSEE is 9.75%. Unlike many other states we pay this on our food also. I don't mean just cooked food, but ALL food. I hope they don't tax our food an addition 1.5 percent. I have enough trouble feeding my family as it is.
Taxing luxury items such as liquor and cigarettes is a simple way to tax things that people do NOT have to have. That way you choose if you pay that tax by your actions. We all have to have food.
Extra taxing on fast food is fine, but not at the store.

Extra taxing on fast food is fine, but not at the store. That TN tax is insane! It doesn't make sense to put an across the board sales tax, because as you point out, TN already has a high tax on sales including food. However, doing that would be a "fair" way of making sure that all of us pay our share to fund this healthcare program. If a person didn't want to fund it, or fund it as little as possible, they would cut back their purchases, correct? Those that choose to spend, spend, spend, could fund, fund, fund. Again, its very easy to choose smokers as the ones that fund this stuff. How about adding 5.00 per month to every cable, satellite, or cell phone account? These are luxuries. What about 5.00 to the price of a movie ticket, or any type of recreation facility charge? There would be a huge outcry. My point is, its easy to say that tobacco and alcohol are luxuries, and should therefore be taxed really high, to fund these programs. But there are so many other ways to do it that would be a fair assessment against all, rather than a "minority'. Just my o pin yon. :-)

Freckles is right there are tons of taxes on your bills already.
I believe the point of smokers and drinkers paying more for health are is that health care for that demographic cost more in the long term. I don't know the stats, but that is my guess.

I agree that smokers and drinkers will have higher health bills, but this tax is not directly for smokers. Tobacco taxes are soaring to finance a major expansion of health insurance for children. President Obama signed that health initiative soon after taking office.
