Anybody who saw this movie and understood it, let me know.
I find that I like a lot of movies I don't understand, though. This was one of them.

I was going to see this, but I heard that Daniel Day Lewis was the only good thing about it.

I guess it's based on the novel Oil! by Upton Sinclair. I haven't read that one but I did read The Jungle in highschool. Sinclair was the king of writing about the futility of the lower class during the industrial revolution. I don't know how closely the movie follows the book but I imagine it to be a sort of unauthorized biography of a ruthless turn of the century oilman.

The Jungle is ABSOLUTELY one of my all time favorites... and I couldn't eat meat for 6 months or look at a hot dog for over a year.

I'm probably going to have to track down that book.
I think the confusing thing about the movie is that it was about a ruthless oil man, but there weren't ever any value judgments. Everything is kind of left to the viewer to decide. I like those kinds of movies, but I haven't really been able to decide who the hero was and who was the villain.
I liked The Jungle too, and have ridden my bike through the neighborhoods it took place in. I know Bubbly Creek still exists....

Finally saw it. Dug it. Very well acted and written. Kind of saw it as a sort of reverse morality tale. All the meek and decent sorts got trampled on by the bold and ruthless sorts.

Sort of, but the bold and ruthless types didn't really "win" in the end. Seemed like they got what they wanted, only it wasn't what they wanted.
