A white hair in my left eyebrow. I wouldn't think this would be quite as depressing as it is. It is a glaring confirmation that I am officially old. I know many people gray when they are young. But not in my family! My grandmother is in her 90s, ill, but still has a full head of natural dark brown hair with a few gray hairs here and there. I know it is a small cosmetic thing that can be easily rectified with tweezers. The bigger issue is that mid-life crisis feeling that if this is it and then we die, I am not sure this is enough. So then what? There are not as many possibilities for me as there were when I was younger. For that I am both grateful and sad. Grateful that I have my daughter. Sad that I don't have the option to quit my job an travel the world. Sad that I won't grow old with the man I loved. Sad that I am not terribly excited or interested at what comes next. Sad that I may not become excited or interested before I am in my grandmother's position and facing the end of my life. Does anybody else feel old? ...sad that I am getting too lazy to check my spelling.

I think we all have our moments when that happens. Go do something for yourself, even if it is something little. For me, I found my first grey hair at 19, just before I graduated from highschool. I have quite a bit at this point and I'm only 33. (Thank goodness for hair coloring) It's all about attitude baby. You got it, work it for all it is worth.

My daughter got her first grey hair at 3, at 12 she's got quite a few. How is that fair? She's blessed with red hair that is naturally multitonal (is that a word) (two shades of red, blonde, and dark brown) that hides it well. She told me yesturday that her grey hairs are blonde, a girl learns early.

I enjoy the thought of being old... So many memories, so much growth... My mother-in-law didn't GET to be old, and I think that is sad. Old means experienced, and I want to use that experience wisely. I love my gray hairs...

you're only as old as you feel. i truly believe that. The trouble is I feel pretty old today. I have been snappy and irritable and just a bitch recently, particularly today after the discovery of my first (and hopefully only) gray eyebrow hair. I sent an email to my sisters about my entrée into crone-hood along with a copy of your "over 30?" post. I love my sisters! They make me laugh through any real or imagined shit-storm. Below is the response from the youngest: I'm down with being a curmudgeon. Embrace it. Be that cantankerous old lady from whom the neighborhood children flee. You'll inspire myths and legends...thereby unwittingly helping those poor television and internet saturated youngsters use their dangerously underdeveloped imaginations. You're performing a community service! You deserve a medal!!!
P.S. - D says Bush screwed us so badly that those spoiled kids are gonna lose all their toys anyway.

I know it sounds trite (or a bit Sound of Music) but try counting your blessings - I find it really hard to do but it always helps. At least you had your beautiful daughter before you were too old. I wonder if I will ever get to have kids life runs on apace and we put off so much. Anything you've been putting off Mags that you want to do? Go do it if you can - and take your little girl with you. Or go stand next to someone much older - you know the trick - like if you want to look thin go make friends with a fat girl!!!
