I understand that it's natural for people to look for a reason or a solution when something horrible like this happens, but sometimes bad things happen and nothing can prevent it.
I don't believe that students carrying guns or armed ROTC would have changed the outcome; the guy was obviously going to do harm and his mind wasn't whole at the time. I doubt anything, even students with guns, would have deterred him. It's only speculation that someone with a weapon could have stopped him - more likely, they would have frozen (understandably) or panicked and shot wildly. Just my opinion.

laws about gun control differ very widely from state to state. virginia is one of the easiest states to get a gun legally. the federal government tries to stay away from gun control.. too big of a hot button issue. people try to interpret the second amendment, and usually do so to form it to their own beliefs. the truth is, the framers of the constitution didnt really explain what they meant. you can say that we live in a different time and era than they did, but we are still facing some of the same challenges, just different settings. i think every law abiding citizen should have the choice of whether or not they want to carry a gun. the truth is, that crazy sonofabitch probably would have just committed suicide all by himself if he thought that there would have been students and faculty carrying their own guns. we leave our countrymen out like sitting ducks when we make it illegal for people to carry guns. when we board an airplane, with no way of protecting ourselves, we leave ourselves, and our country open to terrorism.

Some storys that seem appropiate here: Woman Dodges BulletThe woman was working behind the counter when a man walked in and pointed a gun at her face. The woman leaned to the right and ducked just as the man pulled the trigger.
The bullet missed her head but that's not where the story ends. The woman grabbed her own pistol from behind the counter and pointed it at the crook. The man ran out of the store and the clerk fired a shot, but missed. What do you think would have happen to this woman had she not had her own gun? _________________________________________________ Mom: Police Told Daughter To Stop Calling Before Murder-Suicide A Central Florida woman whose 17-year-old daughter was killed in a murder-suicide apparently committed by her ex-boyfriend said the teen was told by police to stop calling for help or she'd be arrested.
Police said Clay Coffner shot his estranged girlfriend, Natasha Hall, in the head outside her DeLand home Friday before turning the gun on himself. This poor girl should have had a gun with her at all times. It may not have saved her, but it couldn't have hurt. Like I have said, the police carry guns, but they only show up after the fact. People should have a Right to protect themselves, their family and property.

Just saying. Never mind. This happened in Texas. I should've read the farking article.

If she didn't have a gun he would have shot her. He tried to kill her, she "dodged" it.. do you think he would have stopped there??? Whether she hit him or not isn't really the issue, if she did not have the gun, she would be dead.

If someone pulls a gun on you, what happens next should totally be on that person's head. Unfortunately, in a lot of states, if you shoot someone in the back as they are fleeing you, you're probably going to be up on charges.

Again.. that is not the point is it? No, but I thought it made for a decent comic aside.

It's all very well to cherry-pick from the news feeds and say "so and so would have been fine if they had only had a gun". Great, but not everyone is inclined to have one, and I would suggest most 17 year old girls are poor candidates for gun possession.
Guns don't make you safer, any more than they cause more crime. If you want one, great, as long as you're responsible. Just don't try to tell me everyone should have one.

I have never said everyone SHOULD have one... (at least I don't think I did) I am just saying RESPONSIBLE, LAW ABIDING people carrying guns is a good thing.
